For years, I’ve been repeating the same advice to my clients and students: own your space. But after recent WordPress drama and watching countless authors struggle with platform upheavals, I’m questioning that mantra.
I haven't lost anything yet, because I'm pretty new to this website and blog business. But I worry about it a lot and try to think ahead. Also, I have the greatest support lady in all the world who has saved me more than once from falling flat on my face, internet-wise.
Theoretically everything I put on my blog (https://ruminations.blog), cloud hosted by WordPress, is backed up because I write locally and upload to the blog. I also copy more substantial writing to a USB drive. HOWEVER... This has been going on now for 10+ years through 3 generations of laptops and a half dozen USB drives half of which I cannot find 😭😭😖🙄
I hear you on THAT, Matthew. I found a lot of value in Tiego Forte's "Building a Second Brain" techniques for organizing. I'm a big believer in using cloud backups just because I live in an area of unstable power. Despite backup power and protection, I lose machines on a regular basis. I've also trouble-shot failed backup drives, USB drives, etc. And while anything can fail, I've decided a solid paid cloud backup service is the closest I can come to safe.

This is great info and it’s helpful to think of it in terms of subscriptions.
Thanks. I have been rethinking a lot the last few months!
